Based in London and completely self-taught, Lawrence Crane is an oil painter and draughtsman implementing classical techniques within Portraiture and Figurative works for the past 7 years.

I primarily work following the human form utilising classical techniques such as can be found in the late Renaissance and Baroque movement emphasising three-dimensional form and light in order to present a striking and dynamic visual language.

My paintings have evolved over time as my technique has adapted to my Artistic articulation and has drawn upon themes that, I find, moves me and connects me to my surrounding and past experiences. I draw upon the movement of the human body found in ballet. As I seek to find a fluidity within the gesture of my paintings I utilise thick impasto and thin glazes to present lumosity and depth; my paintings portray a visual narrative that combines the grace and movement of the human form with natural structures and elements, merging the barriers between humanity and nature.

The connection that I inhabit into my paintings comes from my personal experiences with mental health and the journey that memory and emotion takes us through.

Much of my work currently focuses on an overarching narrative which combines each image into a singular story, however each painting exists within their own right exhibiting a deeper meaning and moment within a journey of healing. Exploring these concepts allows me to share the physical and emotional connection within the self and the connection to those that we are all surrounded by.
